		The Handmade Web
	
		It's 3:47pm on a Saturday afternoon in 2026. I'm attending this class by Trevor and Amalina at the National Library. 			They'd like to convince us to be more mindful about what's happening on the 			internet. 

How to do that? Start at the very start! 

At the beginning, there was Geo cities(closed in 2009). But because of the utter dominance of big tech, people now crave something less aggressive. There is now neocities. nekoweb.org is also a resistance against social network (aggressive and alienating).   Amalina: “A yearning for a softer and freer algorithm internet, not about selling yourself or being sold something”.  


Ie not linkedIN.  In an era of Global AI Wars, Doom Scrolling and the Attention Economy, its easy to think of the internet as an evil place. Amalina is proposing a third way: mindful engagement with the internet.  

There are two internets that we can choose to explore.


    Internet #1: Branching

The old-style internet of discovery, blogs, the feeling that you could find anything(for better and for worse. Where you could get bored after awhile.

 vs 


    Internet #2: Singular


FAANG-run web where you end up on endless doom scrolls. You go only where the algorithm takes you.

 This does feel like a gentle manifesto to reclaim our attention.

	A Journey by Lorry is a collaborative art initiative led by a team of migrant workers.&#38;nbsp;The project was birthed as a safe(read: not a protest) platform for workers to express their thoughts, through poetry, about the practice of travelling to their worksites on the back of lorries.&#38;nbsp;
I was roped in as a contributing artist and a coordinator -- with a main task of recruiting Singaporean artists to create visual responses to the poems. 
I also helped with the crafting of press releases for the publicity team and successfully secured a story about the exhibition in the national broadsheet.

	Online communities like Reddit create safe and anonymous spaces for individuals to be vulnerable about their mental health and plans about taking their own lives.

Goodbye World uses web scraping and Natural Language Processing(NLP) tools to analyse text data from two Reddit support communities and learn what words are used in a virtual suicide note. 
With the help of Machine Learning classifiers, we created a prototype model that identifies individuals at risk of suicide.

	In my advanced photojournalism class, we explore new technologies and methods of reaching a new audience.&#38;nbsp; Two of this semester’s students applied those lessons to their project about mental health and online coping mechanisms like dating, shopping and gaming.
They then “collaborated” with a machine learning model that created beautiful surrealist interpretations of their work.

The images were then sold as NFTs. It raised more than SGD100 in a week for a mental health charity.&#38;nbsp;

	Worked on a quiet comic with Our Grandfather Story’s Jolene Tan about migrant workers being quarantined in hotels.&#38;nbsp;
We chose to work without any speech bubbles because there was a lot that was being said about migrant workers then -- on Facebook, in the media, etc. But almost none of those words were coming from the migrant workers.

	In the period after Lee Kuan Yew’s death, there was a deluge of visual projects, mostly surrounding the intense mourning process the country went through.&#38;nbsp;
I felt disconnected to the tribute-y nature of many of the “Great Leader”-type projects. I also did not feel qualified enough to work on a visual critique of his policies.&#38;nbsp;So, my reaction to the news was a series of portraits of people who shared LKY’s name. Some of whom were born before he even took political office. 
With ever-steady help from partner-in-crime, Sam Chin.&#38;nbsp;
